Care Certificate Standard 1 covers understanding your role.  It helps you understand your role and responsabilties as a care worker along with your rights as a care worker. These include subjects like professional boundaries, knowledge and development, legislation, agreed ways of working along with many other things. 

 

1.1a Using your job description to help you, fill in the box below to describe your main duties.

Offering a high level of person-centred support to all individuals with complex needs while providing resources to those individuals making life decisions. I am responsible for supporting these individuals to help them overcome their existing challenging behaviours through the use of approved company techniques including TCI, Team Teach or Price. I am required to support them in making a healthy lifestyle choices and providing reassurance when going back into the community to access basic amenities. I am expected to work only to approve practices dictated through relevant Policies and Procedures, Legislation and Regulations.

In addition, I am required to assist other colleagues in the general day-to-day housekeeping tasks within the home to ensure we are providing a safe and clean residential and working environment. Always working in a person-centred manner, I am expected to assist the residents with daily tasks within the home while following all approved care plans and arrangements to meet the needs of each individual. Finally, I am responsible for ensuring that any driving undertaking in a company approved car is done in a safe and courteous manner.

1.1b Look up the Care Certificate and the code of conduct for Health Care support workers in England. Complete the diagram to list some of the standards they include.

Code of Conduct for HSC Workers: You are expected to work with your other colleagues to maintain a high level of safe care and support that meets the individuals needs compassionately.

1.1d Being self aware is important for care workers. Think about your previous experiances and the attitudes and beliefs you have, and under the points below explain how they may have affected the way you work.

This is used both as a positive and negative example
As an example, I once worked with an individual who had low standards of personal hygiene. Due to this, he was ridden in bedsores which caused him both discomfort and further health issues. It was important that I established a trustworthy relationship with him, which I did over a period of months. I was able to put into place a hygiene plan that worked with both his individual needs and the district nurse. After working together for a period of time, I was able to get him to a point where he washed daily and took medical care of his bedsores. This relationship helped me to develop key communication skills while working closely with a single individual and others outside of my own organisation. It has also developed my patience and helped me to hone my people-orientated care skills.

Your positive attitude

I am a vegetarian and prefer to avoid cooking or preparing meat. However, for the purpose of my work, I am able to put these feelings aside and focus on the care needs of the individuals I work for.

Your personal beliefs

On a personal level, I strongly believe that individuals should be treated as equals. This should be done regardless of sex, race, disability or other differences. Using this belief, I am able to work equally with everybody including friends, colleagues and external professionals without pre-judgements about each person.

Health and Safety

According to the Health & Safety at Work Act of 1974, I have the right to work in a safe environment and one that provides any necessary protective equipment (PPE) to do my work safely. Under this act, my responsibilities are to work according to the relevant policies within my organisation, report all safety issues to my line manager and adhere to current procedures.

Confidentiality

According to the Data Protection Act of 1998, I am required to protect an individual’s rights to confidentiality. Any misconduct or abuse of this right may result in disciplinary action of the highest degree.

Working time

According to the Working Time Directive, an employee is unable to work more than 48 hours over a time period of 17 weeks. However, it is important I understand that I may be required to opt out of this condition to meet the needs of shift work and rotors.

Pay and wages

According to the Equality Act of 2010, workers within the UK maintain the right to fair treatment and must be paid an equal wage for equal level work.
